What is Post Weld Heat Treatment?
Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) is a process utilizing uniform heating and cooling of the welded workpiece to restore the desired physical properties. This process considers the material’s chemical properties and physical dimensions, applies code guide lined temperature, time, and rate factors to restore the desired properties.
Why use Post Weld Heat Treating (PWHT) services?
Post Weld Heat Treating is applied to restore the desired physical properties of the weldment by eliminating residual stresses, reducing hardness, increasing resistance to corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking, and reducing the possibility of brittle fracture failures.
Why is preheating beneficial?
The welding process itself produces severe temperature changes which produce residual stresses in the weldment. Depending on the type of metal and its intended service conditions, preheating the work piece prior to welding can eliminate or significantly reduce the residual stress, cold cracking, and undesirable metallurgical changes.
